Lisa: Well, hello there! Thank you so much for joining me on this very first episode of The Simply Booked Podcast. I'm so excited! Okay, so I'm going to tell you a little bit about myself. I am born and raised in Oklahoma. We are a flyover state just north of Texas.
I was just looking up some fun facts about Oklahoma to share [00:01:00] with you. And I, learned this just now. Oklahoma has an official state meal. This was decided in 1988, so I was five years old at the time. But I'm going to read this menu because you guys, this is all you need to know about Oklahoma. This sums it up.
The meal consists of: black eyed peas, chicken fried steak, okra, squash, corn on the cob, cornbread, barbecue pork, biscuits, sausage and gravy, grits, strawberries, and pecan pie.
Seriously. I think that's all you need to know. That's all you need to know.
So I graduated from college with a degree in Marketing and a minor in Accounting, and I've primarily only had accounting jobs since college. So, most recently, my corporate job was a Senior Staff Accountant in a payroll office. And I left that job, let's see, spring of 2021. So it was a little over a year ago now and I [00:02:00] did not plan on starting a business, but I just did. It's just happened. I started a party rental business.
And it's all because I was watching Schitt's Creek. And I know a lot of you have seen it. If not, oh my gosh, you have to watch it. It's so funny! I don't know what season this all happens, I should know this. I should've looked it up at least. But it's when David starts Rose Apothecary. He just has a vision for what he wants, he's able to execute it. I think I was just watching that and saw some of myself in him.
I think when I started my party rental business, I probably shocked everyone that I wasn't doing a bookkeeping business. I feel like bookkeeping was the next logical step, after having so much accounting background, but my corporate job left me wanting to seriously detox and what's more different than accounting than a party rental business, right? So, I did that for a little while, [00:03:00] and there was some little part of me who always knew that that was going to be a temporary thing. I even had kind of a thought that one day I would look back and say, Hey, remember the summer that I did Pearl Pit, that was the business name. So I don't know why I had that feeling, but I just did, because logically I was in it for the long haul, and I wanted to do that for a long time, but, the more and more I did it, the more I realized it was a lot of manual labor. I'm just not cut out for that. And I was away on the weekends from my family and that wasn't really the vision I had.
Obviously I didn't really think much about it. I just thought I had an idea and then I did it. So, I ended up listing my business for sale. After four months of owning it, I hadn't really kept up with the books for that business. And once I did, [00:04:00] and I realized it was profitable, I was inspired to list it for sale. So I sold the business and I was able to use that profit from the sale to invest in a couple courses for my bookkeeping business.
I already knew from having that other business that I had good instincts, and that I had the confidence I needed to get things done. And I have the know-how like, I couldn't do the website thing, I'm interested enough in all of the systems that I can learn anything that I need.
Now that I'm a bookkeeper, I really see how I can bring value to other small businesses. Knowing your finances can give you the clarity to make better decisions as a business owner. So that's what I do now.
I feel like I have a lot to say, and I have a lot to offer. So that's why I started this podcast. So hopefully I can bring value [00:05:00] to not only my clients, but to other business owners who are walking the same path.
So before I let you go, I have something for you, it's a free download. I will link it in the show notes. It's my New Biz Quick-Start Guide. This is packed with steps to take, to make yourself a legitimate business. So if you have a passion project, or if you watch Schitt's Creek and feel like you want to start the next Rose Apothecary... There's 22 steps in this checklist, and I don't tell you that to intimidate you, I tell you that just to let you know that this is thorough. This is everything you need to do to start out and be legit. So I recommend downloading this guide and if it helps you, and if this is something that you're interested in, please send me a direct message, tell me that you listened, tell me that you got the guide, tell me that you got started. I [00:06:00] cannot wait to celebrate you. I'll see you next time!
